The Sports and Society Initiative was honored to host a screening of the film “The Loyola Project” on March 10 at the Wexner Center for the Arts.

The film follows the Loyola Ramblers 1963 National Championship team who changed the game of basketball and broke racial barriers.

The film came to Ohio State as part of the “63 for 63 Screening Series” happening at colleges and universities throughout the United State and Canada through late April, and was screened in partnership with Ohio State Athletics, Ohio State's Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Wexner Center for the Arts.

A conversation about race, athletics and the film featuring Buckeye legend Clark Kellogg, sports psychologist Doc Sailes and SSI Director Nicole Kraft followed the film screening. Attendees were able to ask questions and engage in the content of the film.

The discussion was moderated by Dave Filipi, the Wex's director of film/video.

Sailes recounted how conversations about race and athletics used to not happen and how happy he was that opportunities exist now for these important dialogues.

“Know that on the other side of discomfort, the discomfort of having conversations like this, is enlightenment and understanding,” said Sailes. “Get through the discomfort and challenge what you know.”

Check out The Loyola Project’s website to learn more about the film and head to SSI’s calendar to see upcoming events.
