The Silent Struggle: Experts speak out on athletes' mental health
The Drake Group is bringing together a blue-ribbon slate of mental health experts who are practicing clinicians currently working in the nation’s top college athletics programs.
Topics addressed by the panel include how athletes are harmed by others, how athletes are harmed by the system, challenges faced by athletes of color coping with predominantly white institutions and the extent to which athletes enter college already damaged by previous experiences.
The experts will also discuss what the college mental health support system should look like and how we can fix the causative factors of harm. The last thirty minutes of the program will be devoted to answering questions from the audience.
Speakers will include:
Shamaree Brown, director/student-athlete programs and compliance, Atlantic Coast Conference
Daniel Chung, sports psychologist, Rutgers University Athletics
Abigail Eiler, assistant athletic director, Director of Athletic Counseling, Chief Diversity Equity and Inclusion Officer, University of Michigan Athletics
Brad Hambric, clinician and licensed professional counselor, University of Georgia Athletics.
