SSI, ASC Career Success Provide Students an Inside Look at Sports Media at Ohio State Football Game
Students from communication, journalism, sport industry, and other majors gained a unique, behind-the-scenes perspective of sports media during the Ohio State football game versus Grambling State.
The experience was organized in partnership with ASC Career Success and the Sports and Society Initiative, offering students a chance to see firsthand how journalists and broadcasters cover one of the biggest stages in college sports.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
The program immersed students in the fast-paced environment of Ohio Stadium on game day. They observed how media professionals prepare for and execute coverage, from pregame press box operations to in-game reporting and postgame interviews. This included meeting with football sports information director Jerry Emig (right).
For many students, this was their first time stepping inside the press level at Ohio Stadium, where they saw writers, photographers, broadcasters, and digital teams in action. The experience helped them connect classroom lessons to real-world practice.
Building Career Connections
In addition to observing the work of professional journalists, students also had the opportunity to ask questions, network with media representatives, and reflect on the range of skills required to succeed in sports communication. They also took part in post-game media availability, including interviews with top receiver Jeremiah Smith (right).
The collaboration between Career Success and the Sports and Society Initiative underscores Ohio State’s commitment to career readiness. By exposing students to professional environments early in their academic journey, the program helps them envision career pathways in media, sports, and beyond.
