Resume Tips for Students Preparing to Submit Applications
Formatting and Starting with a Clear Header
- Keep it clear and concise - avoid too many colors and different fonts
- Make clear headings for each section of the resume
- Include your full name, phone number, professional email address, and LinkedIn profile (if available).
- Use a larger font for your name so it stands out.
- Avoid including unnecessary personal details such as age, full address, or photo unless specifically requested.
Highlight Your Education
- List your school, degree or program, expected graduation date, and relevant coursework.
- If your GPA is strong (typically 3.5 or above), consider including it.
Showcase Relevant Experience
- Include internships, part-time jobs, volunteer work, research, or leadership positions.
- Put experience in chronological order from most recent to least recent
- Focus on accomplishments rather than just duties.
- Use bullet points and start each point with an action verb (e.g., 'Developed', 'Organized', 'Led').
Quantify Your Impact
- Whenever possible, include numbers to demonstrate results.
- Examples: 'Increased club membership by 30%' or 'Managed events with 100+ attendees.'
Include Skills
- List technical skills, software, languages, and relevant tools.
- Examples: Microsoft Excel, Python, data analysis, public speaking, and project management.
- If there isn’t room for a skills section, try to highlight your skills through your work experience and accomplishments
Add Activities and Leadership
- Student organizations, sports teams, and community involvement can strengthen your resume.
- Highlight leadership roles or initiatives you started.
- You can also include academic achievements, awards, honors, or scholarships.
Keep Formatting Clean and Professional
- Use consistent fonts and spacing.
- Keep the resume to one page (especially for students).
- Use bullet points instead of long paragraphs.
Tailor Your Resume for Each Application
- Adjust keywords and highlight experiences that match the specific role or opportunity.
- Review the job or program description and mirror relevant language.
- It is recommended to create a master resume with all your work experience.
- This can be longer than one page
- When applying for a position, copy the master resume and edit it according to the job application
Proofread Carefully
- Check for spelling, grammar, and formatting errors.
- Ask a mentor, professor, or career advisor to review it before submitting.
Save and Submit Correctly
- Save your resume as a PDF unless the application requests a different format.
- Use a professional file name such as: FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf.
